Annual Ernie’s Roadhouse Charity Golf Tournament raises over $5,300 for local community agencies.

A big thank you goes out to our Regional Councilor for Waterloo, Helen Jowett. She showed us the definition of initiative for the greater good of the community while speaking at the Rotary Club - giving us a positive insight into the remainder of 2015.

Thank you to all who participated in making the very first Cambridge Ribfest a successful event this year. We had a great group of club members mixed with volunteers who worked together and made sure things ran smoothly. Cambridge Rotary Sunrise was very happy to be a part of Cambridge history, and we had the perfect weather for this event all weekend! The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise, together with Ernie’s Roadhouse, hosted the 36^th Annual Ernie’s Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 14^th. This was the sixth year for our Rotary club as the charity of choice. The weather was sunny and cool for the 48 golfers who took part in this year’s tournament.

 

The 28th Cambridge Times Rotary Classic Fun Run is scheduled for Sunday May 25, 2014 .., and we hope to have raised more than $750,000 over this run's history.

We were pleased to have Nathan, this year’s KidsAbility Cambridge Ambassador, join us this morning along with his mother Jenna.

 

Nathan’s life began with many doubts. There were doubts that he would survive and if he did, doubts that he would be able to move past the words “can’t” and “won’t”. Doctors diagnosed Nathan with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita and Multiminicore Myopathy; both are complicated terms that mean, in short, a joint and muscle disorder. For Nathan, his hands and feet were turned in and his muscles were so weak that he couldn’t hold his head up. At six-months old, his family brought him to KidsAbility for weekly appointments.

Jenna, spoke to us about how through the therapy and support that Nathan benefits from at KidsAbility, he is being empowered with the skills to transform “can’t” into “can” and “won’t” into “will”.

The 3 Cambridge Rotary clubs held a Joint Meeting on Wednesday November 13^th. Members of the Preston Hespeler and Cambridge Sunrise clubs joined host club Cambridge North at the Galt Country Club.
 
The guest speaker was Dr. Andrew Hunt. The title of his presentation was "The JFK Assassination: 50 Years Later -Or a Half Century of Reflection". Dr. Hunt is a professor of history at the University of Waterloo and is well qualified to talk about President John Kennedy, as we near the 50th anniversary of his assassination.
 
About 60 Rotarians and guests listened to Dr. Hunt analyze the Kennedy Presidency, its successes and shortcomings. Cambridge North President Kathi Dick presided over this the first of what we hope will be many Joint Meeting involving the 3 Cambridge Rotary clubs.

While many kids were focused on the last day of school, one Grade 7 student was awarded for making a lasting impact throughout the year.

 

 

Emra Patterson, a 12-year-old, Grade 7 student at St. Michael Catholic Elementary School was selected from among elementary pupils in Cambridge and North Dumfries to receive the 2013 Compassionate Kid’s Award from the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise.

The award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of a young person in the community and was presented at the school’s year-end mass on June 21, at St. Clement’s Church.

Patterson is part of the Me to We campaign, serves in the children’s ministry at her church and helps as a media projection volunteer.

At Christmas, she joined members of her church and family to deliver cards and sing carols to residents at the Fairview Mennonite Home and she regularly corresponds with her “Compassionate Child” in the Phillipines.

Patterson said she is also a lunch buddy for a fellow student with Down’s Syndrome and was nominated by an educational assistant at the school.

School education assistant Nela Mawdsley says, “in addition to academic excellence, Emra has been recognized for her contributions in drama, camp club, and has won the Leader of Virtue for several years. Emra is kind, generous and caring to all. She is a student that makes a positive and lasting impact on those she meets.”

Despite her long list of involvement helping others, she was humble in acceptance by explaining she was surprised to actually receive the award, which the local Rotary Club introduced in 2011.

It is intended to recognize and honour youth in our community who show a commitment to making the world a better place for others. It includes a plaque and $500 for the winner’s charity of choice.

Patterson has chosen to donate the money to The King’s Way Outreach Centre in Hamilton.

“They help feed 200 people a day and help people with addictions and job (seeking),” she explained.

As for the summer, Patterson’s looking forward to spending time at her cottage, attending camp and going to Darien Lake.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise, together with Ernie’s Roadhouse, hosted the 35^th Annual Ernie’s Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 8^th. This was the fifth year for our Rotary club as the charity of choice. The overcast skies didn’t dampen the spirits of the 56 golfers who took part in this year’s tournament.

Christmastime was a little bit brighter this year for 24 grandchildren and 20 grandparents who enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner together hosted by Cambridge Holiday Inn and the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise.

Rotarians provided a gift for each child and a framed photo of each family taken with Santa and his elves.

Thanks to the generosity of the family of the late Muriel Gordon, there are three door prizes of gift cards for local shops for the grandparents.

The Cambridge chapter of CANGRANDS supports grandparents in our community who are raising their grandchildren, and is organized though the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank. The group began with the direction of Betty Cornelius of the CANGRANDS organization -- an independent, not-for-profit organization which carries out activities to empower Kin caregiver families who raise grandchildren. CANGRANDS works to overcome the inequalities and injustices which exist within society for Kin caregivers families who are raising theirs or someone else’s children.

As a special event, Cambridge Holiday Inn provides a traditional Christmas dinner for the group at their hotel.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise has selected Sam Mazmanian as the recipient of the 2012 Compassionate Kid’s Award. 

Mazmanian, 13, is a student at William G. Davis Public School. He was selected from nominations of elementary school students in Cambridge and North Dumfries attending public, separate, private, ethnic or home schools.

The award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of a young person in our community, and will be presented at the school’s final assembly on June 28, 2012 from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. The award includes a plaque and $500 for the charity/cause of the recipient’s choice.

School principal Dudley Brown says, "Sam is a wonderful young man that not only is a high achieving student but is well-liked by staff and students for his kindness to others and his hard work in the school and the community."

Mazmanian was chosen for his past volunteer work as a school soccer coach for younger children and as a music tutor. He has served as office helper and on the safety patrol team. His extracurricular volunteer work includes several years helping the Cambridge Firefighters Basket Fund, collecting scrap metal to raise money for his scout troop. In addition he is fundraising through pop can recycling for his church and various charities – a project he started with his sister.

In his spare time, Sam is involved with the Cambridge Aquajets and enjoys downhill skiing, biking, and playing in the school band.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise introduced the award in 2011 to recognize and honour youth in our community who show a commitment to making the world a better place. Nominees are recognized for making life better for others and doing more than expected for their age.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise, together with Ernie’s Roadhouse, hosted the 34^th Annual Ernie’s Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 9^th. This was the fourth year for our Rotary club as the charity of choice. The off and on again rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the 95 golfers who took part in this year’s tournament.

The dinner was held at Ernie’s Roadhouse and as always enjoyed by all the participants. The silent auction included some spirited bidding and the ever popular “Bucket of Booze” Raffle was a big hit.

We were successful in raising over $11,000 to help further the good works of Rotary. Some of our projects this year will be to support the following:

1.     Alzheimer Society

2.     Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation – MRI Campaign

3.     Cambridge Shelter Corporation

4.     Nutrition for Learning

5.     Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council

The GSE team from Italy has arrived.

Each year our Rotary club chooses an elementary school in Cambridge to partner with on a literacy project. This year’s partnership was with Chalmers Street Public School in Galt. Chalmers Street Public School is a growing community with 530 students from JK-Grade 6. They are one of 12 schools in the region with all day every day kindergarten.

 

We kicked things off with the Rotary Reading Challenge which ran from Monday, April 30 until Sunday, May 6. Students received one ballot for every 20 minutes they read during the week for a chance to win prizes donated by our Rotary club. Principal Cindy Benedetti’s goal was to have all students participate in the reading challenge and Read For The Fun Of It.

 

The following week was Guest Reader Week (May 7-11). We really enjoyed coming in and reading to the students. The kids were great and we were made to feel very welcome by everyone in the school community. 

The Rotary Clubs of Cambridge welcomed our Group Study Exchange Team on Saturday April, 29, 2012.  The team is visiting Canada from District 2060 in Italy.

Our Italian friends will spend the next five weeks in Canada, beginning their first week here in Cambridge.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise established The Rotary Scholarship Award which is awarded annually to post-secondary students in the Region who have demonstrated a combination of academic merit, exemplary humanitarian service and established financial need.

This award is presented to an exceptional student chosen by the club's Scholarship Committee.

This year's winner is Hayley Bartlett.  The Grade 12 student at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School served on student council, mentored oncology patients at Hamilton Health Sciences and The Hospital for Sick Children and won a Research In Motion award that enabled her to go to India to help build a school.

Congratulations Hayley!  Good luck with your studies.

St. Joseph Catholic School and Hespeler Public School in Cambridge, ON are both celebrating World Polio Day by holding "Purple Pinkie" events.  St. Joseph's is hosting a Pennies for Polio project this week and is raising mone to help in the fight to end worldwide polio.  For only 60 cents, another child can receive polio immunization. 

Students will paint their "pinkie" purple ... in solidarity and remembrance of the indicator ink that is used when a child is immunized.  This simple act helps prevent the cripling and sometimes fatal disease Poilo? For details, e-mail our Club.

Some volunteers with the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise assisted the other two Cambridge Rotary clubs with a Trail Clean-up at Dumfries Park on Saturday morning, Sept. 24th.  The weather was cool and sunny which allowed us to clear the inner set of trails through the park.  A special thank you to Elinor and John Hueton for organizing this environmental event. 

 

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise has selected Taylor Schmidt to receive its 2011 Compassionate Kid’s Award.

 

Schmidt, 14, is a student at St. Joseph Catholic School.  She was selected from among elementary school students in Cambridge & North Dumfries attending public, separate, private, ethnic or home schools.

 

The award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of a young person in our community, and will be presented at the school’s final assembly on June 27^th, at 10:30 a.m.  The award includes a plaque and $500 for Taylor’s charity of choice.

 

Each year our Rotary club picks an elementary school in Cambridge to partner with on a literacy project. This year’s partnership was with Hillcrest Public School which backs onto a beautiful woodlot in a residential area of Hespeler.

 

We kicked things off with the Rotary Reading Challenge which ran from Monday, April 18^th until Sunday, April 24^th. The student who read the most minutes during the week for each grade would receive a prize donated by our Rotary club. Principal Anna Aagaard’s goal was to have all students participate in the reading challenge.

 

 

On Sunday, May 1st, the three Cambridge Rotary Clubs helped out the environment by assisting the GRCA with planting native trees in Dumfries Conservation Area.  A special thanks to our club volunteers who braved the wet weather to make a difference in our community:

At the 2nd Annual Rotary Sunrise Trivia Challenge, a team from Ideas Unlimited proved this to be true.  The team took first place, a spot they also held last year.

Congratulations to all of the teams, and to Kathy Marziano of Glen Morris, Ontario who was the winner of the 50-50 draw and a prize of $241.00

 

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise joined forces with the Cambridge North, Cambridge Preston-Hespeler & Kitchener Grand River clubs for a Rotary booth on November 18^th at the Business Expo in Kitchener hosted by the Kitchener-Waterloo, Guelph and Cambridge Chambers of Commerce.
 
The goal was to raise public awareness and recruit new members. We had a good response to our booth, with a steady flow of traffic throughout the event. The theme of the booth was "Why Rotary?". Rotary offers great opportunities to invest back into your local and international communities!

 

 

 

 

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise unveils a club logo, which incorporates the Rotary wheel as a rising sun on a silhouette of the City of Cambridge.  It reflects two water colours representing the Grand and Speed Rivers which flow through our community.  The bridge depicts the popular concrete bowstring arch design of many bridges that connect the three founding communities of Galt, Preston and Hespeler.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise, supported by CIBC, presented a $1,000 scholarship to grade 12 student Jessica Vanlauwe at the sold-out Business Excellence Awards hosted by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce on March 24, 2011.

The Rotary clubs of Cambridge enjoyed time together in celebration of Rotary International's (RI) 106th anniversary.

Over 70 Friends of Rotary, former Rotarians and recipients of the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow (Rotary`s highest honour) joined together for a breakfast at the Galt Country Club. The annual event celebrates the work of The Rotary Foundation, and invites a guest speaker to share their experience in relation to the foundation. Guest speaker The Honourable Justice Sharon M. Nicklas, spoke of the power of influencing lives. As a Rotary Youth Exchange student to Sweden, she was inspired to help others.

Beginning their day with a tour of historic Galt and a visit with Mayor Doug Craig, the Group Study Exchange (GSE) Team enjoyed some of the sites of Cambridge on a walking tour, and a visit to the University of Waterloo's School of Architecture.

Each year our Rotary club picks an elementary school to partner with on a literacy project. This year's partnership was with PrestonPublic School nestled in a residential area of Preston across from St. Clement's Church. According to Principal Don Oberle. "Literacy is a key focus for us, with teachers participating in numerous professional learning opportunities that enhance student learning experiences".

Thank you to all of the volunteers who showed up to plant native trees and shrubs along Chilligo Creek and Schiedel Pond on April 25th.

On Saturday, October 17th, almost 50 performers joined the Tamil Cultural Association of Waterloo Region in a cultural night at the University of Waterloo's Humanities Theatre. The music, dancing and celebration by south Indian and Sri Lankan performers helped in the fight against polio by raising more than $500.

Kerry Townson, co-founder of Families of Canadian Soldiers in Afghanistan, and Val Brooks presented about a support network for families of Canadian Forces men and women on duty around the world.

The Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise, supported by CIBC, presented a $1,000 scholarship to a local high school student at the Bell Business Awards hosted by the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce on March 20, 2008.
