McDougall Cottage Historical SiteMichelle Bartlett is currently the Lead of Content and Experience at McDougall Cottage Historic Site in Cambridge. After working as a professional falconer for 25 years, Michelle switched gears and joined the Region of Waterloo as a Teacher/Interpreter at McDougall Cottage in 2007; eventually becoming the Historic Site Supervisor. She is passionate about this charming stone home, located on the banks of the Grand, and excited about the ways that today’s museums are evolving to expand the stories they tell, develop engaging and innovative ways to tell those stories and to create and offer relevant content and programming that connects with their communities. Located on the banks of the Grand River in Galt’s Historic Factory District, McDougall Cottage Historic Site is a c. 1858 granite and limestone house that was once the home of two families of Scottish settlers, the McDougall’s and the Bairds. Nearly 165 years after being built, this charming cottage is now an active hub for community events, with tours, special events, workshops, student education programs and more. Locals and visitors alike are welcomed to learn about the history of the Cottage, marvel at the stunning hand-painted 110 year old trompe l’oeil friezes and murals, interact with engaging exhibits and peer out the window at the ever-evolving neighbourhood of the downtown Cambridge Historic Factory District. McDougall Cottage is a place where people can connect with the diverse past, present, and future as history and daily life come together in this engaging community space. |

End Polio NowRotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years, and we’ve made incredible progress in the fight to rid the world of it forever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've helped to reduced polio cases by more than 99.9 percent. It’s crucial to eliminate polio from the last three countries where it remains endemic and to keep other countries polio-free. |

End of PolioThe World Health Organization (WHO) announced on 25 September that Nigeria is now polio-free and has been officially removed from the list of countries where polio is endemic. It’s been 14 months since any cases of polio caused by the wild virus have been detected there. With Nigeria’s historic achievement, polio remains endemic in only two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan. That means transmission of the virus has never been stopped there. Nigeria was the last country in Africa where polio was endemic. The continent celebrated its own first full year without the disease on 11 August. Once three years have passed without a case in WHO’s entire African region, officials will certify polio eradicated there. “Rotary congratulates Nigeria on its tremendous accomplishment in stopping polio,” says RI President K.R. Ravindran. “On behalf of the entire Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), we thank volunteers, health workers, and parents in communities across Nigeria for their tireless commitment to ensuring every last child is protected against this devastating disease. In the months ahead, their dedication will remain as important as ever, as we work to keep Nigeria polio-free and to eliminate polio from its final strongholds in Pakistan and Afghanistan.” Nigeria’s success is the result of several sustained efforts, including domestic and international financing, the commitment of thousands of health workers, and new strategies that reached children who had not previously been immunized because of a lack of security in the country’s northern states. TYPE 2 POLIOVIRUS GONE FOR GOODIn other encouraging news, an independent global health commission officially verified on 21 September that wild poliovirus type 2, one of three strains of the wild virus, has been eradicated worldwide. Although the last type 2 case was detected back in 1999, the confirmation is an important milestone, as Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative prepare to switch from a form of the vaccine that targets all polio types to one that does not protect against type 2. The announcement by the Global Commission for the Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication confirms that only two strains of the wild poliovirus remain. Of those, type 3 wild poliovirus hasn’t been detected in almost three years, and wild poliovirus type 1 is endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. FUNDING INCREASE NEEDED TO REACH FINAL GOALOn 25 September, the GPEI's Polio Oversight Board met to determine the next steps needed to eradicate polio. The group concluded that $1.5 billion in new funding is needed to help Rotary and its partners end polio in the next few years. With Nigeria now polio-free, spending will focus on the most vulnerable children in Afghanistan and Pakistan, while continuing to shield millions of children already living in polio-free countries. “With a fully funded program and global commitment to ending this disease, we have the opportunity to interrupt transmission of the wild poliovirus in Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2016, opening the door for certification of a global eradication in 2019,” says Michael K. McGovern, chair of Rotary’s International PolioPlus Committee. “With [Rotary members’] continued support, we will soon see our dream of a polio-free world realized.” Doante to the Miles to End Polio campagin Rotary News 25-Sep-2015

Creating an Outdoor Learning EnviornmentTechnology is an amazing new addition to our education systems in Ontario, however, with children hiding behind computer screens all day they are more often or not missing the big picture. The world is more than the internet and there is more to learning than the confines of a classroom. Sarah Son, a kindergarden teacher and mother of 4 and Jen Clarke are trying to bring the classroom outside. We had the pleasure of hearing them speak this past Friday about their strong initiatives and success in bringing classes at Centennial Public School in Cambridge outside to learn.

2015 Rotary Classic Superhero RunOn Sunday, May 24, 2015, the three Rotary Clubs of Cambridge and the Cambridge Times will invite runners, joggers and walkers to show they care about children in Cambridge with special needs. Once again we will be asking individuals, schools, teams, businesses and industry to help us continue to support KidsAbility Centre for Child Development. Last year over four hundred people participated to make the day a huge success. The presentation of $40,000 to KidsAbility in Cambridge to assist in providing life-changing services and programs to over twelve hundred children showed, yet again, that this event is providing a significant boost to this essential community organization. Since 1999, the Cambridge Times Rotary Classic has helped raise $670,000 for KidsAbility. Rotarians estimate the total funds raised from this event since being established in 1987 is well over $1 million. Check out the web site for more information and online registration http://rotaryfunrun.ca/

KidsAbility Ambassador Nathan wows RotariansWe were pleased to have Nathan, this year’s KidsAbility Cambridge Ambassador, join us this morning along with his mother Jenna.
Nathan’s life began with many doubts. There were doubts that he would survive and if he did, doubts that he would be able to move past the words “can’t” and “won’t”. Doctors diagnosed Nathan with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita and Multiminicore Myopathy; both are complicated terms that mean, in short, a joint and muscle disorder. For Nathan, his hands and feet were turned in and his muscles were so weak that he couldn’t hold his head up. At six-months old, his family brought him to KidsAbility for weekly appointments.
Jenna, spoke to us about how through the therapy and support that Nathan benefits from at KidsAbility, he is being empowered with the skills to transform “can’t” into “can” and “won’t” into “will”.

Emra Patterson honoured with 2013 Compassionate Kid's Award
As reported in The Cambridge Times
While many kids were focused on the last day of school, one Grade 7 student was awarded for making a lasting impact throughout the year.
Emra Patterson, a 12-year-old, Grade 7 student at St. Michael Catholic Elementary School was selected from among elementary pupils in Cambridge and North Dumfries to receive the 2013 Compassionate Kid’s Award from the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise. The award recognizes the outstanding contributions and achievements of a young person in the community and was presented at the school’s year-end mass on June 21, at St. Clement’s Church. Patterson is part of the Me to We campaign, serves in the children’s ministry at her church and helps as a media projection volunteer. At Christmas, she joined members of her church and family to deliver cards and sing carols to residents at the Fairview Mennonite Home and she regularly corresponds with her “Compassionate Child” in the Phillipines. Patterson said she is also a lunch buddy for a fellow student with Down’s Syndrome and was nominated by an educational assistant at the school. School education assistant Nela Mawdsley says, “in addition to academic excellence, Emra has been recognized for her contributions in drama, camp club, and has won the Leader of Virtue for several years. Emra is kind, generous and caring to all. She is a student that makes a positive and lasting impact on those she meets.” Despite her long list of involvement helping others, she was humble in acceptance by explaining she was surprised to actually receive the award, which the local Rotary Club introduced in 2011. It is intended to recognize and honour youth in our community who show a commitment to making the world a better place for others. It includes a plaque and $500 for the winner’s charity of choice. Patterson has chosen to donate the money to The King’s Way Outreach Centre in Hamilton. “They help feed 200 people a day and help people with addictions and job (seeking),” she explained. As for the summer, Patterson’s looking forward to spending time at her cottage, attending camp and going to Darien Lake. |

Sunrise Rotarians and Holiday Inn partner for Christmas fun and feast for local grandkidsChristmastime was a little bit brighter this year for 24 grandchildren and 20 grandparents who enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner together hosted by Cambridge Holiday Inn and the Rotary Club of Cambridge Sunrise. Rotarians provided a gift for each child and a framed photo of each family taken with Santa and his elves. Thanks to the generosity of the family of the late Muriel Gordon, there are three door prizes of gift cards for local shops for the grandparents. The Cambridge chapter of CANGRANDS supports grandparents in our community who are raising their grandchildren, and is organized though the Cambridge Self Help Food Bank. The group began with the direction of Betty Cornelius of the CANGRANDS organization -- an independent, not-for-profit organization which carries out activities to empower Kin caregiver families who raise grandchildren. CANGRANDS works to overcome the inequalities and injustices which exist within society for Kin caregivers families who are raising theirs or someone else’s children. As a special event, Cambridge Holiday Inn provides a traditional Christmas dinner for the group at their hotel. Merry Christmas everyone! |
